![]() The Takoma Safe Routes to School program aims to encourage students to walk to school regularly and safely. In addition to providing built in exercise for the students, this will reduce traffic congestion and emissions around schools. Safe Routes also finances infrastructure projects in the City of Takoma Park such as improving sidewalks and intersections. We are pleased to announce that the grant has been awarded through December 2013. 5K Challenge - Sunday May 6, 2012 New for 2012! The Race Committee is very excited to announce that Takoma Park Middle School has officially joined the race! Welcome TPMS! Registrants for the 5K run will wear a chip timer that automatically records their start and finish. Timers will be distributed on race day and must be returned after the race. Register before April 18th and enjoy the benefits of Early Bird registration: reduced registration fees and T-shirt size guarantee. Get excited for a super fun community event!
International Walk to School Day is held on the first Wednesday in October. Over 5,000 schools from 50 states participate, including four area schools. Walkers from the U.S. will join schools in 40 countries around the world. Since 2007, Safe Routes to School has offered Bike Rodeos free of charge to area schools. Even if you don't have time to walk every day, you can join a small group in your neighborhood to organize a WALKING SCHOOL BUS. With funding from Safe Kids Montgomery County, Safe Routes to School will install a barricade in the parking lot to encourage drivers to drop off and pick up students safely. New this spring! The increased popularity of skateboarding as a means of transportation to school has prompted Takoma Park Middle School and SRTS to team up to offer a workshop with demonstrations modeling skating skills and practices for optimal safety.
