Parents often find themselves saying the same things over and over. "Look both ways before you cross the street." We heard it a million times and we have said it a million more. And yet we still witness our children running into the street without looking. The conventional wisdom these days suggests we should tell our kids to "Look left, right and left again." Now we can say that a million times, hoping each time, that our children listen and will take the time to look before they cross.
The Safe Routes program wants to help parents get the message across to the students in Takoma Park. That's why additional funds were requested in the last grant cycle to develop a new pedestrian safety program. In order to reinforce safe pedestrian practices, Takoma Park Safe Routes to School will be launching a new Crosswalk Simulation Activity for elementary school aged kids. The Crosswalk Simulation Activity kit will include a mock crosswalk, traffic signs and signals, including a working mini traffic light and other interactive props to engage the students. The SRTS Coordinator will be scheduling workshops in schools and in the community. The workshop will emphasize all the basics of pedestrian safety including tips for students to share with drivers.
