Winter Basketball League
Last year, the Winter Basketball League served nearly 600 boys and girls' ages 5 – 12 yrs and grades K – 8 living in and around Takoma Park, Maryland. This program is brought to you by the Takoma Park Recreation Department in partnership with the Recreation Committee.

League Philosophy
The Winter Basketball League is a non-competitive, instructional, community league.

Program goals are to:

• introduce boys and girls to the fundamentals of basketball
• emphasize that playing the game and being a member of a team are more important than winning by not establishing league standings or having playoffs/championship games
• encourage personal improvement, sportsmanship, and fun
• provide comparable playing time for all participants
• meet new kids from community and surrounding areas

There are three ways you can register your child(ren).

1. Online Registration: activenet.active.com/takomaparkrecreation
2. Walk-in Registration:
• Takoma Park Recreation Department (7500 Maple Ave, Takoma Park, MD. 20912)
• Takoma Park Recreation Center* (7315 New Hampshire Ave, Takoma Park, MD. 20912) *Recreation Center accepts checks, money orders, or credit cards only.
3. Download and send your Registration Form to Takoma Park Recreation Department. 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, MD 20912, Attn: Basketball. Payment must be included to be registered and postmarked by the Registration Deadline (December 9).

Registration will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis until the maximum number of registrations is reached per age group. After the registration deadline has passed, registrations will ONLY be taken for teams that have spaces available. The Takoma Park Recreation Department reserves the right to place participants on any team with available spaces.

Scholarship Opportunity
Scholarship Registration: $10
Scholarship opportunities are available to all Takoma Park Residents in need of assistance. This benefit is available to Takoma Park residents who can provide proof of enrollment in the Free or Reduced Meals program or similar financial assistance program.

Coaching Information
Volunteer coaches are always needed, training is provided.

Mandatory Meeting: Required for all coaches. Meeting on Tuesday, November 22th at the Takoma Park Recreation Center: 7315 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park, MD. 20912, at 6:30 PM. Packets and rule books will be handed out. All head coaches must complete a thorough, multi-state background check.

Volunteer Coaches must complete:

Team Assignments: Coed divisions will reflect gender equity based on number of participants.

Special Requests: Requests must be made in writing and submitted to the Takoma Park Recreation Department League coordinator by December 2nd, 2011. Every attempt will be made to accommodate special requests.

Team Rosters: Coaches will receive their team rosters and practice schedules on December 16th, 2011.

Calendar
9/01/11: Winter Basketball Registration opens

10/7/11: Fliers will be distributed to Takoma Park and surrounding schools

11/22/11: Mandatory Coaches Meeting at the Takoma Park Recreation Center located at 7315 New Hampshire Avenue, in Takoma Park. The meeting will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

11/25/11: Two weeks before the *Registration Deadline

12/2/11: Deadline for special requests

12/6/11: Coaches Clinic (training is provided)

12/6/11: Coaches paperwork due

12/9/11: *Registration closes

After 12/9/11: Your child will be placed onto a waiting list. You will be notified if space becomes available.

12/16/11: Rosters and practice schedules completed. Coaches will begin contacting players with practice schedules and additional information about the league.

12/30/11: Game schedules will be posted online by 6:00 p.m.

1/3/12: Practice begins (Practice times are determined by gym availability and coach's schedule). Weekday practices will be 1 hour each week at the same time and location.

1/7/12: First game of the season (season is 8 weeks)

2/25/12: Last game of the season

3/3/12: Make-Up dates, only used if there are cancellations during the season.

Waiting List
Waiting list dates: 12/9/11 – 1/7/12 *or sooner depending on division. After the registration closes at midnight on 12/9/11, you will need to place your child on the waiting list. Waiting list applicants are placed in the order in which the registrations were received. We will call you directly if we are able to place your child.

Refund Policy
All refund requests (less an administrative fee of $ 15.00) must be made in writing by 12/31/11 (seven (7) working days prior to the first game on 1/7/12); after this date there will be no refunds given. Registrants assume the risk of changes in personal affairs or health.
