Green Energy The International Council For Local Environmental Initiatives is an organization of local, national and international government offices working to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas pollution. ICLEI sponsors annual conferences bringing together experts in the field and representatives from government agencies who have been successfully working to implement projects aimed at reducing global warming. The City of Takoma Park has been a member of ICLEI since 1997. The City received a grant from ICLEI in 1999 to develop an Action Plan for Greenhouse Gas Reduction for Takoma Park. The grant enabled the City of Takoma PArk and Mount Rainer to work together to identify generation rates of CO2 in our cities and develop proposals for control measures. On of the measures identified in the Greenhouse Reduction Action Plan was a proposal to investigate municipalizing the electric energy supply in Takoma Park. The City Council established a Municipal Energy Authority Task Force to begin looking into the option. Currently the Task Force is exploring developing smaller scale projects to improve residents access to green energy and implementing energy conservation measures in homes and businesses in the City. Additional information about these efforts is available on the Committee On The Environment web site (Greenhouse Reduction Action Plan). The Municipal Energy Task Force has a listserve available at tpmea@yahoogroups.com The Corn Silo Takoma Park is storing corn for home heating. The silo is located on City property at the Public Works Department's Oswego Avenue location. For more information see: Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
