TAKOMA PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT K9'S

Takoma Park began its use of police canines in the early 1990s with the first team of Cpl. Scott McAuley and Credo, a two-year-old German Shepherd. In January 1999, a second team was formed with Officer Keith Largent and Shadow, a 15-month old German Shepherd. Both dogs came from the former Czechoslovakia and respond to commands in German.

Takoma Park K-9 partners work in patrol, used for tracking and detection of both objects and controlled substances (drugs). The use of canines is a matter of both police officer and public safety, with the dogs, rather than officers, often conducting building searches. From the outset, the Takoma Park Police have required a canine whose nature allows them to be used for public demonstrations.

K-9 Credo established an enviable record of service in his eight and one-half years on the force. He was the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Triple Crown and Outstanding Case awards from both the national and regional U.S. Police Canine Association.

Credo was retired, as a corporal, on May 19, 2000. He lived with the McAuley family until his death in November 2002, after several months in failing health.

After Credo's retirement, Cpl McAuley partnered with Axel for two years until their retirement in 2003.

In August of 2004 the Takoma Park K9 team was joined by Cpl. Doug Malarkey and his K9 officer Diesel.

The K-9 partners must participate in monthly retraining and certification after their initial 14-week training. The dog always lives with it's human handler, who commits personal time towards care and feeding of the dog.
