First Time Home Buyer Class

The City of Takoma Park Housing and Community Development department is sponsoring a first time home buyer class on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm! The event features expert speakers from a lending institution, title company, real estate office, insurance and inspection firms will be available! Attendees will be able to learn the entire process of buying a house or condo!

The event is sponsored by a HUD-approved housing agency. A certificate of completion will be awarded to attendees. The First Time Homebuyer Class is free for Takoma Park residents ($25 for non-residents.)

Young Voices For the Planet Film Festival: A movie night for youth, family, everyone!

Join us for an entertaining and inspirational night of short films about youth solutions to the climate crisis. We will also be premiering Lynne Cherry’s latest film “We Sing Out!” about Pete Seeger & The Rivertown Kids! The films will be followed by a panel discussion with the Takoma Park Young Activist Club and book signing with author and filmmaker Lynne Cherry! Check out the flyer for more information!

Monster Bash is Coming!

Join the Takoma Park Recreation Department for our annual Monster Bash on Saturday October 25 from 1-5 pm. (Note the NEW start time!) Staff are preparing for a host of events that are designed for the entire family, with mixing and mingling with your neighbors (featuring games, face painting and a visit from Chuck E. from Chuck E. Cheese) followed by the Annual Costume Contest and Parade that will start on Carroll Avenue in the street in front of the Co-Op and we will end the festivities with the Costume Award Ceremony and celebration. Public Works Contract Awarded

In September, the City issued a Request For Proposals for indefinite quantities for asphalt, concrete, and stormwater structures. Seven bids were received and opened on October 1. Click here for bid result tabulation. The intended contract period is for three (3) years with the option to extend for two (2) additional one (1) year periods.

Community Police Academy - Sign Up Now!

The Takoma Park Police Department is now accepting applications for the next Community Police Academy. The Community Police Academy will start on November 6, 2014.

The Community Police Academy is a 10-week long program consisting of one class a week on Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The classes cover topics such as patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, etc.  The presentations are slide show/lecture style and will be given by officers, detectives and civilians of the Takoma Park Police Department. There will also be multiple opportunities for hands-on learning through equipment demonstrations, practical scenarios, field trips and ride-alongs with patrol officers. Through the Community Police Academy, citizens gain new insight into how law enforcement officers perform their duties.

Takoma Junction Update

The four finalists made public presentations (see video) on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. to a packed house in the Takoma Park Community Center Auditorium. Submit your questions via a webform through Friday, September 26 at 12:00 (Noon) for inclusion in the packet for the City Council meeting on Monday, September 29. The September 29 Council Meeting will focus exclusively on the proposals and the meeting agenda will be available in advance. There will be additional opportunities for Council and public discussion of the proposals in the coming months. Links:

Junction Parking Pay Station

The City of Takoma Park's Junction pay station at the Junction has become operational as of Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Parking at the Junction costs $0.25 per 15 minutes with a 4 hour maximum between the hours of 7:00 am and 11:00 pm. Sundays and federal holidays are free. Overnight parking is not allowed.

The City-owned lot is located between the TPSS Co-op at 201 Ethan Allen Avenue and the Takoma Auto Clinic at 7221 Carroll Avenue. Parking spaces at the back of the lot by the fence are managed by the TPSS Co-op for the use of Co-op staff and customers.

$5M News!

The City of Takoma Park is a quarter-finalist for the Georgetown University Energy Prize. The City is among a very select group of only 52 small to medium sized cities and counties from across the country that have advanced to the quarterfinalist round of the competition. Arlington Virginia is the closest competing jurisdiction.
