Notice of Public Meeting on Library Redesign

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

All are invited to attend a public meeting on Tuesday December 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Takoma Park Maryland Library, where Architects from The Lukmire Partnership will present options for a renovated and redesigned City library.

These design options are based on service priorities expressed through public input in focus groups and surveys during the January 2014 Needs Assessment, and a public meeting with the architects on October 8.

Please attend this important meeting, which will help determine how the Takoma Park Library will continue to thrive as a progressive public institution into the 21st. century.

For more information contact Ellen Robbins at the Library or 301-891-7258.

November Newsletter is Out!

Friday, November 14, 2014

This month's Newsletter keeps an eye on development downtown, including the new book store at Busboys and Poets, set to open on Carroll Street. Also, see articles about blighted properties (should we tax them?), details on the solar co-op (want to join?), dates for everything from breakdancing to poetry, great photos of the Sligo Sweep the Creek event and much more. A hard copy of the publication should land in residents' mailboxes over the next few days.

Holton Gateway Green Space Meeting

Thursday, November 13, 2014

Help the City of Takoma Park develop goals for improving green space at Takoma/Langley Crossroads. Last year, the City made improvements to the SE corner of the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Holton Lane. The NW corner has a long green strip with mature trees but could be improved as a more inviting community asset.

Share your ideas! This public meeting is open to all, spread the word and invite your neighbors.

Municipal Government Works Month

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Since 1993, Maryland's cities and towns have celebrated Municipal Government Works Month each November in an effort to promote residents’ awareness of and interest in local government. To help promote municipal government awareness, the Mayor issued a Proclamation on October 27, 2014 proclaiming November as Municipal Government Works Month.

The City of Takoma Park would like to give the community a glimpse of the important work that municipal government does to enhance the quality of life of Takoma Park residents by highlighting what’s happening in November.

2014 Fall Leaf Collection

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Loose leaf collection will be provided by the City from November 17, 2014 through December 19, 2014. Residents can rake leaves to the curb at their convenience during the 5 week period. Most streets do not have an assigned collection day. The goal of the program is to collect leaf piles within 2 weeks of their appearance at the curb.  Leaf collection is dependent on the weather and rain or freezing conditions can slow collection.

There are five streets that receive collection days on scheduled days only. These streets are state highways and have a heavy volume of traffic. State highway leaf collection routes:

Leaf collection on Saturday, November 22, 2014 & Monday, December 15, 2014:

  • Carroll Avenue, (7000 to 7800 block)
  • Ethan Allen Avenue
  • Philadelphia Avenue

Leaf collection on Monday, November 24, 2014 & Saturday, December 13, 2014:

  • Piney Branch Road,
  • Flower Avenue (7900 to 8600 block)

There will be no collection on the Thanksgiving holiday which is observed on Thursday and Friday, November 27-28. No other streets will receive collection on the dates when the posted streets are collected (November 22 and 24 and December 13 and 15).

During the collection in November, the crews will concentrate on picking up large piles of leaves. In December, when the crews are making the last collection on each street, they will thoroughly collect all remaining loose leaves from the gutter and grassy strip along the curb.

The Public Works Department welcomes your comments and suggestions about the service we are providing. Please contact Public Works by phone: (301) 891-7633. You can also call the leaf collection hotline at (301) 891-7626 to notify us when your leaves have been raked out. Our goal is to collect leaf piles reported on the hotline within 10 days of the call.
