JOB SUMMARY AND DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine maintenance duties within assigned area in parks or streets.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs routine maintenance and basic repairs on equipment and vehicles utilized in the performance of essential functions of the position.

Operates equipment to remove snow and ice from streets and grounds.

Operates heavy equipment in the maintenance of parks and streets.

Pours and finishes concrete surfaces. Repairs and replaces curbs and gutters.

Mows grass, removes leaves, maintains park beds and lawns; plants trees, shrubs, weeds and waters as needed.

Delivers mulch to residents.

Maintains right-of-ways including: trimming trees and bushes, weed removal, mowing grass, and removing trash and debris.

Performs asphalt repairs; patches pot holes on City streets.

Trims and prunes trees.

Maintains playground equipment and benches.

Removes trash from the City parks.

Performs basic carpentry and electrical work.

Cleans and removes trash from storm drains.

Installs and maintains signs within the City.

Paints curbs, crosswalks, and speed humps.

Removes leaves from the City streets and park areas using rakes and leaf vacuum.

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists in preparation for special events within the City.

Assists other Divisions as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED; and,

One year of progressively responsible related experience; or,

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Commercial Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Operation and maintenance of all equipment utilized in the performance of the essential functions of the job.

Methods of concrete finish work, black top construction, and other roadway maintenance and repair techniques.

General landscape practices and planting techniques.

Playground equipment maintenance and safety guidelines.

Principles and practices of turf maintenance.

Basic repair and maintenance of general equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Basic painting using a sprayer.

Installation of thermoplastic street marking using a heat gun.

Tree pruning techniques, proper use of chain saw, chipper, pole saw and loppers.

Skill in:

Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.

Repairing and maintenance roadways, sidewalks, and streets.

Use of all equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Mental and Physical Abilities

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, pesticide labels, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, giving close attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
