  •  A transient community – majority of the residents are apartment dwellers
  • Also referred to as Maryland’s International Corridor, due to cultural diversity

What Happened in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads?
  • In December 2002, two mothers and two infants were involved in a pedestrian accident. Both infants were killed!
  • Numerous pedestrian-driver accidents
  • 9 pedestrian fatalities in four years (1999 – 2003)

Crossroads Development Authority (CDA) Response…
  • Takoma/Langley CDA, Inc. – A business association of 158 businesses
  • Developed a safety tip sheet for resident pedestrians within the Crossroads
  • Planned to sponsor a K-5 educational poster-campaign

Multi-Jurisdictional Pedestrian Safety Committee (MPSC)
  • Function - To persuade City, County and State to make necessary modifications to maximize mechanical pedestrian safety


  • Purpose - To assess the pedestrian safety needs in the Takoma/Langley Crossroads with multiple levels of government, the private sector, the faith-based community, etc.

  • What is CSAFE? – Collaborative Supervision and Focused Enforcement
    • Multi-jurisdictional community-based crime prevention and public safety initiative in the Crossroads
    • Coordinate activities with three police departments: Montgomery County Police (MCPD), Prince George’s County Police (PGPD), Takoma Park Police (TPPD)
    • Funded through the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention, the Montgomery County Collaboration Council and the City of Takoma Park
    • Maryland International Corridor location
