City Manager's Update - June 19, 2006

City Manager Matthews informed the City Council that the City had obtained an occupancy permit for Phase Two of the Community Center project on June 14th. She expressed her appreciation to the Recreation Department staff for its hard work on the Grand Opening Celebration, which was held on June 15th and June 16th.

The City Manager updated the City Council on the status of the sale of City-owned property located at 8425 Piney Branch Road. The proceeds from the sale of the property were designated for the Community Center project. As previously mentioned, the prospective buyer had encountered some difficulties in obtaining financing; due to the condition of the property and the required renovations, traditional mortgage financing was not a viable option. The parties were unsuccessful in identifying an alternate type of financing, so the City Manager advised the City Council that she had signed a release earlier in the day. Based on the advice of the City Attorney’s Office, staff would issue a new Request for Proposal in the near future.

City Manager Matthews informed the City Council that she received the geotechnical report from ECS, the company retained by the City to conduct soil borings in the area of the proposed gymnasium, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Because she had just received the report, the City Manager stated that she had not yet thoroughly reviewed it. She would do so and report back to the City Council during the month of July.
