COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATES

Community Center Rendering

Following several years of community discussion, construction of the new Community Center got underway in the summer of 2003. Phase One of the project was completed in October 2005. This work included construction of the Municipal Building addition, the demolition and renovation of the upper level of the Municipal Building , and construction of the Computer Learning Center (located between the Municipal Building and the Library). Administrative staff offices (with the exception of the Recreation Department) are now located on the top floor, and the Police Department is centralized on the first level.

Phase Two involved the renovation of the portion of the building formerly occupied by City staff. In September 2005, the City Council awarded a contract for this work (sometimes referred to as the Community Plaza Level) to TRG Construction, Inc. Work commenced in late October 2005 and was completed in early June 2006. New recreational offerings include a dance room, a teen room, and a game room.

In May 2006, the City Council authorized a change order to the City's contract with TRG Construction, Inc. for installation of an elevator cab in the shaft constructed as part of Phase One of the Community Center project. The installation is scheduled to be completed in December of 2006.

The Community Center master plan includes the construction of a gymnasium to be built at the northwest corner of the building near the Grant Avenue cul-de-sac. The City Council authorized funding for certain technical studies for additional soil borings and the location of utilities in the proposed construction zone. The City Council also authorized a feasibility study of the proposed gymnasium addition. The feasibility study was completed by ANCL Architects in November 2006.

Full funding for construction of a gymnasium has not been identified at this point, and construction drawings would need to be prepared before a gymnasium could be built.

The Takoma Foundation undertook a fundraising campaign to purchase computer equipment and furnishings for the new Community Center. To date, the Foundation has provided approximately $113,000 to the City; these monies were used to buy equipment and furnishings for the Computer Learning Center , the art room, the teen room, the game room, and other community spaces. You can support the efforts of the Takoma Foundation through the "Buy a Brick" program or through outright donations. For further information, visit the Foundation's website at www.takomafoundation.org.

Regular updates on the Community Center project are provided to the City Council and are posted to this page. Please refer to this page for the most up-to-date information on the project.
