This is preliminary information about the Ward 3 special election. Additional information will be posted the week of March 10.
The special election will be held on Tuesday, April 8, at the Takoma Park Fire Station, 7201 Carroll Avenue.
The term of office for the person elected will begin April 21, 2014 and end November 16, 2015. Subsequent term(s) will follow the normal two-year Council term schedule, with elections held in November of odd-numbered years.
Qualifications of Candidates
Candidates for the Ward 3 City Council seat shall have resided in Ward 3 for at least six months immediately preceding the election. Candidates shall be registered voters of the City. Councilmembers shall maintain their principal residence in the City and in their ward during their term of office. Councilmembers are prohibited from holding other publicly elected offices during their term of office and are prohibited from serving on any City board, commission, or other body that has authority to adjudicate or otherwise resolve disputes.
Petitions for Candidacy
In order for a candidate's name to be placed on the special election ballot, he or she must submit a petition at least 20 days prior to the election, on a form provided by the City Clerk, and signed by at least 10 eligible voters in Ward 3. There is no nominating caucus for the special election. The deadline for receipt of petitions is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014.
Any registered voter may file an application to vote by absentee ballot. Completed applications must be filed with the City Clerk. Upon verification of a voter's eligibility, an absentee ballot will be issued, either by mail or in person. The voted ballot must be received by the Clerk prior to the closing of the polls on election day.
Early voting will take place at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue, on the following dates:
- Sunday, April 6 - 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.
- Monday, April 7 - 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
