The City of Takoma Park is pleased to introduce the Façade Easement Program, which provides matching funds to business and property owners for physical improvements to building exteriors and their surroundings. The program will provide a dollar for dollar match up to 50% of the overall cost for eligible improvement expenses, with a minimum value of $2,000 and a maximum value of $10,000 per storefront. Similar easement and grant programs from past years for façade-related improvements have had significant positive impacts on the City's commercial areas.

Please download the letter below outlining the eligible areas in the city, types of improvements covered in the program, and details on an information session on February 28 at the Takoma Park Community Center Auditorium. The application deadline is March 31, 2012 and applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss potential improvements with staff prior to making a submission. For more information, contact Erkin Ozberk at (301) 891-7213 or ErkinO@takomagov.org.

PEPCO Tree Maintenance News
February 14, 2012
PEPCO has been developing work plans for regular maintenance pruning along low voltage delivery lines around the City. They will be working on the single and vertical triple lines that residential service wires connect to. PEPCO foresters are determining what areas need pruning and are inspecting nearby trees for faults.

If a tree with a significant fault is found where failure might cause the tree to damage wires, PEPCO is asking permission from the City and the homeowner for removal. If the tree is dead, hazardous, or scores in the 1% range, according to the factors listed in the City Code, permission to remove will be given. A 1% ranked tree is likely to need removal within a few years and it seems sensible to allow these removals at no cost to the property owners. Since the property owners will get the declining tree removed at no cost to them, it is strongly encouraged that they replant new trees to replace the lost canopy.

PEPCO is also removing City trees from the right of way that are agreed to be hazardous or near death. After the tree removal work is completed, the City will bring in a contractor to grind stumps in the right of way; home owners will be responsible for stumps on their own property. The planting spaces that become vacant will be added to the City's potential tree planting inventory and the City will replace the tree when it schedules replanting on that street.
